Greg Nagy & the John Hill Band

Greg Nagy-guitar & vocals, Nick Calandro-bass & John Hill-drums

Real nice review in the iconic Vintage Guitar Magazine…

"Blues rocker Greg Nagy makes the Northern industrial equivalent to Southern country of the 1950s and ’60s. He melds ’70s West Coast R&B, Brit-ish blues rock, Albert King tones, dollops of Steely Dan, the Rascals and Elvin Bishop, and the unhurried approach of a player justifiably confident in his material.

Always a tastefully impressive guitarist, he continues to grow as a songwriter and singer, proving himself immediately in “Stranded,” a soul-blues tune that leads into “Walk Out The Door.” The two are among the best examples of Nagy’s strongly rooted style.

He also continues to grow as a producer and record-maker, al- ways keeping the big picture in mind. Whether it’s knowing when to step aside for co-producer Jim Alfredson’s keyboards in “Still Doing Fine” and the moving ballad “Run Away With You,” or adding short, telling licks to “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City” and the “Voodoo Chile”-inspired “Long Way To Memphis.”

Nagy the guitar player works in service to the song. And with Alfredson, Nagy the producer makes sure the songs work in service to this excellently realized album." – Rick Allen

Twyla Birdsong Band

Twyla Birdsong (vocals), Ibrahim Jones (Bass), Clarence (Boonie) Dottery (drums), Doug Fritch (guitar), Mike Skory (keyboard)

From the first moment Twyla Birdsong sets free a deep soulful note, audiences are moved by the raw talent and radiance that pours from this incredible woman. Her rich, resonant voice strikes a balance between diva and divine, connecting her with audiences through the soul of her song and her presence on stage.

The force that is Ms Birdsong, bears a striking resemblance to distinguishable female vocalists before her with the same synergy between self and song. Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James - women who fill your hearts with their voice.

Twyla has embarked on a journey with Jazz and seeks to re-connect audiences with the joy of Jazz review shows from days gone by. She built her blooming career on the Blues, but her recent flirtation with Jazz is producing profound results. Standing ovations and encores from audiences who haven’t heard this kind of untrained passion in decades are wowed by her modern review UPTOWN.

Reminiscent of a Cotton Club supper show, UPTOWN is built on a bedrock foundation of the Blues mixed with sultry modern soul and sexy jazz standards. Twyla reconnects audiences to the sounds and imagery of an intimate, soul stirring remembrance of Jazz that audiences feel a part of.

Mark Randisi & the John Hill Band
Apr
6
8:00 PM20:00

Mark Randisi & the John Hill Band

Mark Randisi-vocals, Pat Cronley-piano, Kurt Krahnke-bass Fred Knapp-drums

About Mark…

When Andrea Bocelli first heard Mark Randisi sing, he believed he was listening to a Frank Sinatra recording. That's a common response, but Mark is modest: "I'm flattered when people say I sound like Sinatra. I developed a love for the music and I respect those who created it. However, I am being myself ..."

Close your eyes or turn your head. You'll swear the voice you hear is the original Chairman of the Board, it's really the voice of Mark Randisi, keeping the classic sound and style of Sinatra alive.

What Mark does is an incredible tribute, not a mere imitation. His devotion to the music is apparent, and you'll be swept up in the emotion he brings to each of his quality performances.

Raised in an Italian family in Detroit, Mark was surrounded by a passion for music. His father was a trumpet player and his grandfather an opera singer. After working in a family-owned painting business- As Casy Kasem would say, Mark "put down his paint brush and picked up a microphone."

According to Mark, it was Joe Vicari, CEO and owner of the Andiamo's restaurant dynasty who really gave Mark his first shot at entertaining in the public. A loyal friend, Mark has never forgotten those who have helped him along the way. He can still be seen as a featured performer (along with other headliners such as, Regis Philbin, Tom Jones, Howie Mandel, Natalie Cole, Paul Anka, Gladys Knight, Lou Rawls and more) at Andiamo's Celebrity Showroom in Warren Michigan.

Mark has appeared on stage with diverse performers and celebrities such as Ray Charles, James Darrin, Don Rickles, Joan Rivers, Debbie Reynolds, Fabian, Connie Stevens, Rich Little and more. He gets lavish praise from other performers and observers; some kudos are especially interesting - for example, Paul Rosenberg, producer/manager for rap star Eminem, wanted Sinatra music at his wedding. Mark was the only "Live" entertainer considered for this star-studded event. He was hired and was an instant hit!

It's not only celebrities who appreciate Mark's classic style, well known people in the media sing his praises as well. Author, radio and television host Mitch Album has been to Mark's shows, and insisted Mark be a first guest on his television show. He proclaims, "Mark's show is a must-attend!"

Whether accompanied by big band music or a full string orchestra, a Mark Randisi concert is pure magic. His smooth vocal stylings and engaging stage presence has taken him across the U.S. and Europe, performing with world-class musicians and singing with accompaniment by a single piano up to a 63-piece orchestra.

Mark's entertaining personality, sense of humor and rich voice make him an ideal choice for events of all kinds. People who attend a Mark Randisi concert go away smiling, knowing "The best is yet to come."

Accomplished on electric bass, tenor sax, piano, and tuba, Clif’s interest in jazz organ was sparked after attending a concert featuring a gospelstyle B3 player. He began listening to jazz organ legends like Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Dr. Lonnie Smith and others. In February 2014, Clif was further inspired by meeting Hammond Family Artist Jim Alfredson, of the group Organissimo. Upon learning that he was playing an inferior keyboard, Mr. Alfredson generously gave Clif the vintage Hammond M3 on which he had learned to play. Mr. Alfredson remains a valuable mentor and friend. In early 2015, Clif became a student of Jazz Organ Monster Tony Monaco, in his role as ArtistinResidence at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

Guitarist-composer Neil Gordon has performed at festivals and venues throughout Michigan, including the Detroit International Jazz Festival, the Birmingham Jazz Festival, the Detroit Institute for the Arts, the Firefly Club, and the Lansing JazzFest.  He has led jazz jam sessions in the Lansing area.  Before returning to Michigan, Neil studied in Washington, D.C. with Paul Bollenback of the Joey Defrancesco Trio.

About guest artist Steve Davis…

Steve Davis is widely regarded as one of today’s leading improvisers on the trombone. His lyrical, hard-swinging style first gained him broad recognition during the 1990’s while working with the bands of jazz legends Art Blakey, Jackie McLean, Chick Corea’s Origin and the cooperative sextet, One For All. Steve has appeared in Downbeat Magazine’s Reader’s and Critic’s Polls numerous times, winning the TDWR (Rising Star) Trombone Category in 1998. Steve has also been recently nominated by The JJA four years in a row 2010-13 as Trombonist of the Year.
Davis’ most recent recordings For Real and Gettin’ It Done (Positone) feature his longtime musical colleagues Larry Willis and Nat Reeves along with drummer Billy Williams, saxophonists Abraham Burton (For Real), Mike DiRubbo and trumpeter Josh Bruneau (Gettin’ It Done). Steve has led his own groups at such venues as Smoke and Smalls Jazz Clubs in NYC, The Greater Hartford Jazz Festival, Baltimore’s Eubie Blake Center, The Richmond Jazz Society and Hartford Jazz Society, to name a few recent gigs.
Ever in-demand as a sideman, Davis is featured on over 100 recordings. In recent years, “Stevie-D” (a nickname given to him by the late Jackie McLean) has worked regularly with a broad range of jazz icons including Larry Willis’ Quintet, Freddie Hubbard and The New Jazz Composers Octet, Slide Hampton and The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band (feat. James Moody, Jimmy Heath and Roy Hargrove), The Jimmy Heath Big Band, Ron Carter Big Band, Cecil Payne, Horace Silver and Wynton Marsalis’ Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

An evening w/ singer-songwriter Sam Corbin

Sam Corbin is one of our favorite Americana Singer/songwriters from Michigan. With influences ranging from the thought provoking troubadours of Greenwich Village to the soul singers of Detroit, Sam writes honest and meaningful songs drawn from day to day life.  His third and most recent album titled "Let The Fire Burn Strong" released in the early winter of 2016 was named by John Bommarito (Ann Arbor's 107.1 FM) as his #1 album of 2016.

Sam started playing guitar at 16, and shortly after graduating high school he joined a band, playing shows at local bars and coffee shops. Over the years music became his passion, his lifestyle, and his outlet for creativity. It has taken him on the road to music festivals and theatres, radio stations and television, listening rooms, and smoky bars. He has traveled and performed in many states across the East Coast, Midwest, and the South. In 2010, Sam joined the Earthwork Music Collective, a group of musicians working together to build community and self-awareness through the art of music in the state of Michigan and beyond.

Sam plays in many configurations, and is seen often with fellow Earthwork Music artist Jen Sygit!  Together they formed the band Lincoln County Process featuring Michael Smalley, Geoff Lewis, and Mike Lynch. More recently, Sam has been promoting his latest album "Let The Fire Burn Strong" and has been bringing out his full band for shows across Michigan.

Check out his official website for more info at www.samcorbin.com.
